What it is
Therapy in motion.
Walk and talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like: a full psychotherapy session held while walking, rather than sitting in a room. The work is the same. The setting changes everything else.
Being outdoors softens the intensity that can come with sitting face to face. Movement helps thoughts flow and the rhythm of walking gives difficult feelings somewhere to go. Many people find that words come more easily with sky overhead and no eye contact to manage.
There is growing interest in therapy in nature for good reason: natural settings help regulate the nervous system, offering steadiness while we work through what is difficult. Kew gives us both privacy and beauty to do that work in.
Why Kew
A remarkable place to think.
Kew is quiet, contained and discreet. Away from the busiest paths it offers long stretches where conversation stays private, with the glasshouses, woodland and river walks changing with the seasons.
Your entry is included in the session fee, so there is no admission cost on top. I confirm the meeting point by email when you book and we walk at whatever pace feels comfortable. It is conversation first; the walking simply carries it.
If the weather turns, we can switch to an online or phone session instead; the exact wet-weather arrangement is confirmed by email when you book, as it depends on the location.
Who it suits
Made for people who think better in motion.
If a therapy room feels too intense
Side-by-side conversation removes the pressure of sustained eye contact. Many neurodivergent clients find walking sessions far more comfortable; read about my neurodivergent-affirming therapy.
If you feel stuck or restless
Movement can loosen thinking that has been circling for months. Walking is particularly helpful with anxiety, stress and low mood.
If you spend your life indoors
For desk-bound and screen-heavy lives, an outdoor session is therapy and a genuine pause in the week at once.
Young people
Teenagers who would never sit still in a counselling room often open up on a walk. See counselling for young people.
Practicalities
How a session works.
-
Sessions are 50 minutes and cost £80, with Kew entry included.
-
We meet at an agreed gate and set off together; you set the pace.
-
Confidentiality is held carefully outdoors: we pause or change route if paths get busy, and we agree in advance how to handle meeting someone you know.
-
Wear whatever is comfortable to walk in. This is not exercise; it is therapy at a strolling pace.
-
Not sure it is for you? We can mix formats: some clients alternate walking sessions with online sessions.
Light rain rarely stops a good walk and some clients love Kew in drizzle. For heavier weather we switch the session online or to phone so your time is never lost. The arrangement is confirmed by email when you book, as it depends on the location.
The therapeutic work is identical: the same confidentiality, the same depth, the same relationship. What changes is how it feels. For many people the outdoor setting makes it easier to reach difficult material, not harder.
Not at all. We walk gently, pause whenever we like and can sit for part of the session. The movement serves the conversation, never the other way round.
Ready when you are.
A free introductory call, no forms and no obligation. Just a quiet conversation to see whether working together feels right.
