Does this sound familiar?

Anxiety wears many disguises.

Sometimes it is unmistakable: racing heart, tight chest, sleepless nights before ordinary days. Often it is quieter. The over-preparing. The replaying of conversations. The sense of dread with no obvious cause. Being the capable one at work while your stomach churns.

That last one has a name people increasingly recognise: high-functioning anxiety. From the outside everything looks fine. From the inside it is exhausting. Both kinds are real and both respond to therapy.

Anxiety also runs through many of the lives I work with in other ways: it is the most common thread in my counselling for teenagers and it is deeply entangled with neurodivergent experience, which is why my approach there is affirming rather than corrective.

How I work with it

Mind and body together.

My approach is integrative, which matters for anxiety more than almost anything else. We can use practical CBT-informed tools to interrupt spirals in the short term while working psychodynamically on the deeper question: what is the anxiety guarding and where did it learn its job?

Because anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind, somatic awareness runs through the work: noticing where tension sits, learning what settles your nervous system, building steadiness you can actually feel.

Setting matters too. Many clients find walk and talk therapy especially suited to anxiety: movement and the calm of Kew can support some of the regulating for us while we talk.

  • It varies honestly and individually. Some people feel meaningful shifts in a couple of months of weekly sessions; longer-standing patterns usually deserve longer. We review together as we go and you are never signed up to more than one session at a time.

  • No. You do not need a GP referral, a diagnosis or the right vocabulary. If worry is taking more of your life than it should, that is reason enough to talk.

  • Therapy is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis or at risk right now, call 999, NHS 111 (option 2) or the Samaritans free on 116 123, any time of day or night.
