Counselling vs Psychotherapy: What's the Difference?

The honest answer: less than the names suggest and the difference that does exist is about depth and time, not quality. Here is how to think about it.

Both counselling and psychotherapy involve talking with a trained professional in a confidential, non-judgemental space. Both can genuinely help. In the UK the titles are often used interchangeably and many practitioners, myself included, are trained in and offer both.

The good news: you don't have to choose.

As an integrative psychotherapist I move between the two as your needs change. We might begin with counselling-style support through a crisis and find ourselves later doing deeper psychotherapy on the patterns the crisis exposed. The work follows you, not a label.

Whichever word you searched for, the practical next step is the same: a conversation. That is what the free 15-minute call is for. It also helps to know that in the UK neither title is protected on its own, which is why registration matters: I am a BACP Registered Member, working within its Ethical Framework.
